Mathematical and Numerical Analysis of Some FSI Problems

2014

In this chapter we deal with some specific existence and numerical results applied to a 2D/1D fluid–structure coupled model, for an incompressible fluid and a thin elastic structure. We will try to underline some of the mathematical and numerical difficulties that one may face when studying this kind of problems such as the geometrical nonlinearities or the added mass effect. In particular we will point out the link between the strategies of proof of weak or strong solutions and the possible algorithms to discretize these type of coupled problems.

Statistical analysis of the influence of forces on particles in EM driven recirculated turbulent flows

2011

The present paper contains an analysis of the statistical distribution of forces affecting non-conducting particles dispersed in an EM induced recirculated flow in induction furnaces. The simulation is conducted adopting the LES-based Euler-Lagrange approach in the limit of dilute conditions (one-way coupling). It is done by means of a development of OpenFOAM software code. The used Lagrange equation for particle tracking includes drag, EM, buoyancy, lift, acceleration and added mass forces. The relevant approximations for the forces are chosen on the basis of the statistical analysis of the non-dimensional parameters (particle Reynolds number, shear stress and acceleration parameter). The …

Vibration of damaged beams under a moving mass: theory and experimental validation

2004

Abstract A theoretical and experimental study of the response of a damaged Euler–Bernoulli beam traversed by a moving mass is presented. Damage is modelled through rotational springs whose compliance is evaluated using linear elastic fracture mechanics. The analytical solution is based on the series expansion of the unknown deflection in a basis of the beam eigenfunctions. The latter are calculated using the transfer matrix method, taking into account the effective mass distribution of the beam. The convective acceleration terms, often omitted in similar studies, are considered here for a correct evaluation of the beam–moving mass interaction force. The analytical solution is then validated…

A correction method for the analysis of continuous linear one-dimensional systems under moving loads

2008

A new correction procedure for dynamic analysis of linear, proportionally damped, continuous systems under traveling concentrated loads is proposed; both cases of non-parametric (moving forces) and parametric (moving mass) loads are considered. Improvement in the evaluation of the dynamic response is obtained by separating the contribution of the low-frequency (LF) modes from that of the high-frequency (HF) modes. The former is calculated, as usual, by classical modal analysis, while the latter is taken into account using a new series expansion of the corresponding particular solution. The advantage of the suggested method is immediately shown in the calculation of the stress distribution s…
